Fireworks fall victim to heavy rain and snowfall

A FIREWORKS display was cancelled as the Bristol area was hit by heavy rain and snowfall over the weekend.

The display due to take place at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club's ground in Bishopston last night was cancelled due to downpours on Saturday and yesterday.

The outfield of the pitch on Nevil Road was waterlogged, meaning it was not safe for spectators.

However, organisers are considering rescheduling it and will make an announcement early this week. Tickets already purchased will be valid for any rescheduled display.

According to the Keynsham RFC's website last night, their display is still going ahead tonight.

Up to six inches of snow fell unexpectedly yesterday in parts of South Gloucestershire, the Mendips and Bath. Flood warnings were put in place in Chew Magna, with fears of a flood at Winford Brook. There were flood alerts for the River Chew catchment from Chew Stoke to Keynsham and Chew Stoke stream.

Flooding caused travel havoc on railways, with trains between Swindon and Temple Meads station being diverted via Bristol Parkway station.

The Met Office has forecast dry weather conditions between today and Thursday.

The weekend's bad weather followed a warning from the Environment Agency and Met Office that the Bristol area could be more prone to flooding this autumn and winter as a result of the wet summer. The wettest April to June on record, and further wet weather in July, September and October, has left river levels full, the ground saturated and groundwaters in some areas exceptionally high.
