10 things to do in Bristol this week – September 17-21

Make the most of the week ahead with our guide to what's on in Bristol.
1. Do spiders make your skin crawl? Try the spider phobia course at Bristol Zoo on Thursday. Arachnophobes can banish their fear of eight legged beasts with help from experts at the zoo through a combination of education, discussion, relaxation and hypnotherapy. Limited spaces available. 2. Head to Colston Hall for a free organ concert on Tuesday at 7.30pm. 3. The Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival begins this week – at venues including The Watershed, The Arnolfini, The Cube and the Big Top at Creative Common. 4. As part of the Festival of Ideas, wildlife pioneers Alan Root will be talking at The Watershed on Tuesday at 8pm. Fee: �8 full / �6.50 concessions. 5. Meet Clive Burlton, a former member of Bedminster Down Boys Club, to find out how the club established a sterling reputation for sporting success - and hear about a new project to document its history. He will be talking at the M shed on Thursday from 5.30-7pm. Free entry. 6. Further afield, walk in the slipstream of the early pioneer military aviators at Larkhill. See where the Bristol Boxkite made its first flight in 1910 and where the first British military aeroplane unit was formed in 1911. This series of walks from Stonehenge in Wiltshire will cover how aviation developed on Lark Hill from 1909-1914 and how military aviation took off around Stonehenge from 1914-1918. Wednesday from 10.30am to 1pm - tickets cost �5. Call 0844 249 1895. 7. It's also Somerset Art Week this week – with more than 220 inspirational, diverse artworks on display in houses, barns, halls, studios and streets across Somerset. See beautiful garden ceramics, site-specific weaving and light installations, colourful limited edition etchings, dreamy watercolours inspired by the Somerset landscape. 8.
