Brian Ernest John Gosney

MUCH-loved grandfather Brian Gosney has passed away, aged 67. Brian Ernest John Gosney was born in Preddy's Lane, St George, to Lavinia and Jack Gosney, on March 24, 1945.

He went to Crew's Hole methodist chapel and Air Balloon Hill School, before the family moved to Oldbury Court in 1951.

Brian then attended Oldbury Court Infant and Junior schools, where he made many life-long friends, and Downend County secondary school until 1960.

His first job was at Fry's and he went on to work for George Adlams and GB Brittons. Later, he worked as a milkman and fibre glass moulder at St Anne's Board Mills.

Brian met wife-to-be Jenny at Eastville park in 1965, when he pretended to tie his shoelace in order to initiate a conversation. The couple married in 1967 and had two children, Cathy and Paul.

After being made redundant in 1979, Brian studied at Ruskin College, Oxford, for two years, then Cardiff University for four years, graduating with a degree and social work qualification.

He secured a job at Vinney Green Children's Home and worked his way up to deputy manager. Brian transferred to Blackhorse Day Centre and retired in 2000 due to arthritis.

Brian's passions were fishing, watching his beloved Bristol Rovers and playing ten-pin bowling.

But he was such a football fanatic he ended up getting season tickets for both Rovers and their arch rivals Bristol City.

He set up St Anne's Board Mills Fishing Club and enjoyed match fishing, winning many trophies.

After Paul married Gayne in 2009, Brian and Jenny enjoyed several trips out to Thailand, spending time with their cherished granddaughters and step-grandson.

Brian's message to his family, read out at his funeral at Westerleigh Crematorium, was: "I have been so lucky to have had a wonderful wife, two marvellous children and two beautiful grand-daughters but most of all to have had two wonderful supportive parents.

"Please don't cry or be sad for me. I have had a wonderful life and I am lucky to have lived as long as I have. I will be around you all in spirit."
