My sympathy and best wishes for former candidate for police role

FOLLOWING the announcement by my Labour opponent Bob Ashford to stand down as a candidate to be Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner I would like to publicly offer Bob my sympathy at the position he found himself in, my thanks for what he has done in the campaign so far and my best wishes for his future.

I know that Bob has spent his career serving the community working in particular with young people in difficult circumstances in their life. Bob would have been a formidable opponent, with considerable expertise in many aspects of the role. During his time as a candidate Bob has helped raised awareness of, and interest in, the elections for this new role and that has been good for democracy and good for the new role.

Bob has shown great integrity by his decision to stand down. It is a very salutary lesson that involvement in offences, however seemingly minor, can blight your future and life chances. I hope that if nothing else comes out of this unhappy incident it will serve as a reminder that a moment's mistake can have unexpected consequences for people in the future. As this has shown involvement in such activity can remove choices and opportunities from you in later life.

So I sincerely thank Bob for the manner he has conducted himself throughout his time as my opponent and wish him well for the future.

Ken Maddock

Conservative Candidate for Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner
