Bristol Rovers sack manager Mark McGhee

Bristol Rovers have this evening sacked manager Mark McGhee.

The Rovers boss was 'relieved of his duties' minutes after the final whistle at Bootham Crescent this afternoon following a 4-1 defeat at the hands of York City.

The sacking brings McGhee's reign to an end almost 11 months since he had succeeded former boss Paul Buckle at the end of January, after which he managed to rally the players during the early months of his time in charge to guide the side clear of a relegation struggle.

Rovers, however, have struggled to build on the promise shown in the early days of McGhee's tenure at the tail-end and are currently in the bottom two of League Two after securing just four wins from their 22 games so far this season.

Rovers have yet to confirm whether or not assistant manager Shaun North is to leave along with McGhee, but chairman Nick Higgs has said that the club is likely to hold a press conference on Monday morning to reveal their plan of action going forward.

In a short statement issued on the club's official website, Higgs said: "We had hoped that the appointment of Mark McGhee would give the club some stability and long term progress, but unfortunately that has not been the case.

"We have decided that we can no longer continue with the current situation and had to make the difficult decision to part company with Mark. We decided we had to act now before it was too late."
