A COLLECTION of famous photos from the 1960s, donated to a Bristol charity by celebrity photographer David Redfern, have raised more than £2,000.
Mr Redfern, who has photographed everyone from The Beatles to Princess Margaret, donated more than 30 large mounted photographs in aid of Books for Amnesty in Gloucester Road last year.
Colin Richardson, from the charity, said the donation was "incredibly generous".
"The prints have done really well, as have a number of books that Mr Redfern donated. We have a few of the prints left available in the shop, but most went in last year's initial auction."
Mr Richardson contacted Mr Redfern last year – he had known the celebrity photographer when he worked as an musicians' agent in the 1960s.
"I was sorting through the books in the bookshop and I found a signed copy of one of David's photographic books. I wanted to check the signature so I gave David a call. It turned out it wasn't his, but he said he'd be happy to help the shop by sending us a few signed copies of his latest book to sell," he said.
"We were absolutely delighted, but he also said there might be something else he could do for us and that he'd get back to me. It was a few months before I heard from him again, but he called me back to say he wanted to donate some of his photographs to us, so we could auction them.
"David had sold the rights to most of his own photographs to Getty Images some years ago, so he couldn't sell these old prints on, which he'd had in his gallery years before. But he could donate them to charity, so we've become the lucky recipients.
"A few days after the phone call, David drove down from London with his Land Rover filled with these enormous mounted photographs – not just his own pictures, but also pictures by lots of other famous music world photographers he had exhibited in his London gallery."
