PREMIER Motocross champion for the past two years, Bristol's John May, finished as the fourth top points scorer in the opening round of the new series at the Landrake Park venue near Saltash, in Cornwall, on Sunday.
May won the first race and finished in third place in the final race, but he crashed in the second and finished down in 20th place. He was not alone in falling by the wayside, however, as hotly-tipped French ace Nicholas Aubin crashed twice in the first 12-lap race and finished down in 36th place. Belgian Maarten Cremers finished one place further back after smashing front brake disk and suffering the misfortune of a holed radiator.
Cremers and Will Worden set the pace in the first race, but by lap four Luke Hill had taken the lead.
Hill conceded the advantage to May at half distance and he lost another place to Ross Keyworth in the closing stages.
Hill and Cremers disputed the lead at the start of the second race, in which Aubin got a bad start. At the end of the opening lap, Aubin was down in 22nd place. He quickly picked up the pace, however, and had stormed up to 13th place by the end of the second lap. By laps six and seven, Aubin had passed Hill, Keyworth and Cremers and went on to win by 27 seconds.
Aubin and May both made bad getaways in the third and final race, which was reduced in time following a lengthy delay whilst Chard club rider Ben Butler was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth with a suspected broken ankle. Aubin stormed through the field, but was unable to get on level terms with Jackson Evans on the final lap. May, however, brushed past Cremers on the final turn to finish third.
Anthony and Aaron Smith from the Isle of Man increased their lead in the British Sidecar Trials Championship after the two rounds staged in the West Country over the weekend.
The first round winners finished second to Rupert and Chris Kimber in the second round of the event staged by the Camborne-Redruth club in the St Blazey area.
