Pub cleaner jailed over theft

A HORFIELD man who stole £6,000 worth of cash, spirits and alcohol from the pub where he worked as a cleaner has been jailed for 16 months.

Adrian Rogerson had been living in a flat above the Albert Inn in Bedminster and was invited to work as a part-time cleaner, Bristol Crown Court heard.

The court was told that, in the early hours of New Year's Day, he helped himself to 30 to 40 bottles of spirits worth £700, cigarettes worth £400 and £5,110 in cash.

Rogerson, 58, of Filton Road, pleaded guilty to burglary and driving while disqualified without insurance.

The recorder Mr Peter Towler told him: "This was a gross breach of trust."

He banned Rogerson from driving for 18 months. and ordered him to pass an extended driving test before returning to the road.

Amy Jones, prosecuting, said the pub's closed circuit television system identified Rogerson and an unidentified intruder carrying out the raid.

Rogerson admitted theft but refused to name the other person.

He was later stopped in his car by police, and admitted driving while disqualified and with no insurance.

Nicholas O'Brien, defending, said his client was a cleaner at the pub and had the keys, but said what happened was technically a burglary.

Mr O'Brien said his client denied stealing such a high quantity of spirits and cigarettes.

He told the court: "Mr Rogerson tells me he's learned his lesson and he's getting too old for this."
